- Urinary albumin excretion (UAE)
- 30-300 mg/day = 30-300 mg/g creatinine
- Screen UAE at 5th yr for type 1 and at diagnosis for type 2 DM and yearly thereafter
- Predicts CKD (ESRD within 10-20 years), CV dis. and mortality
- False-positives: exercise, acute illness (e.g. infection, fever, CHF, marked hyperglycemia, severe hypertension)
- Rx: ACEI/ARB/DRI
- 30-45% progress to macroalbuminuria
