這篇是關於文章 The Hillary and Obama Sideshow, Posted January 19, 2007 | 10:13 AM (EST) 的簡略分析，希望有幫助。 其實自己完整看一遍，這篇就沒念的價值了。 內容不再詳加敘述。為了增加速度，以中文顯示。
一、 Outline
本文分成四大部分：
第一部分（第一段）：是敘述2006年12月民主黨候選參選人Obama進入了Hillary 的勢力範圍---Manhattan。因此，第一段不重要。 第二部分（第二段～第五段）：描述Obama的優點及缺點，但缺點居多。 第三部分（第六段）：描述Hillary的優點，缺點較少提及。 第四部分（第七段及以後）：Obama 和 Hillary 未來不論哪一位競選，都會有各自的難題：Color and Sex
二、Portion two Analysis:
1. Paragraph 2:
本段一開始提到Obama的演講，其Media Talk 比 Voter talk還多。Media Talk是指媒體較為偏好、或是廣告性質較重的演講；而Voter Talk 應該是指較
實質的政策牛肉。而媒體喜歡大肆宣傳（inflated hype）的原因是，除了這些以外沒有什麼好報了。就拿些名人所做的事情來逗逗社會大眾吧！
2. Paragraph 3:
本段話鋒一轉，If Obama is judged on his record, there won't be much to go on.這句話很好懂吧！Obama的第一大缺點，就是資歷太淺。唯一讓
他紅的是2004年 Democratic National convention 民主黨大會的一場演講。成為參議員（senate）後雖然提出一些新的ground foreign policy以及特別 的外交策略。對於現在的政治環境（political scene），他還是太新。untested,too politically nice, too liberal這些是文章作者給他的批評。and most of all he's an African-American.
3. paragraph 4:
本段一開始說，如果趁著Obama熱，讓他成為總統候選人，那民主黨就要kiss off 170 electoral votes before the first ballot is cast. kiss
of是拒絕或是說再見的意思。原因下面有說：That's the number of electoral votes in the South and the Border states.原來這些不把票投給他的 地區，是南方或是一些邊境州。這些地區大部分是白人，男性主義，贊成戰爭，反政府，強烈反對政策保護弱勢團體。這些地區很偏激，受到ultra conservative Bible Belt fundamentalism（美國中西部正統派教徒多的地方。一聽就覺得很保守...）的影響很大。而且正是這些地區讓GOP presidents Nixon, Reagan, Bush Sr. and Bush Jr.進入白宮的。
4. paragraph 5:
另外一個Obama的缺點是，根據民意調查，他的知名度在黑人間沒有很高，因此對這位黑人參選人並不熱衷，所以他能不能bag the majority of black
votes還是個大問題。他們也懷疑，Obama的改革熱情是否只是曇花一現（a flash in the pan）。
三、 Portion three analysis:
paragraph 6: 至於Hillary，她有驚人的國際名聲，可以獲得很多資金及大企業援助。她經驗豐富，在黨內也是個完美的內部人士。to top cat Republicans licking
their wounds over their midterm debacle, she's still their made-in-heaven balm.但就像Obama一樣，她的致命傷仍是和廣大保守地區的票源說 再見。
四、 Portion four analysis:
這部分一起講。第七段一句話很重要：as Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice recently mused（若有所思的說）, that America is ready to
elect a black president. Others, and that includes Hillary for one, think that America is ready to elect a woman president.看得 懂吧？好。接下來文章作者又很白目的接了一句：This is more delusion.（這是妄想。）接下來是另一段重要的喔：when pollsters ask voters about the importance of gender and race when they vote for president, anybody that doesn't wear a white sheet or sport a Nazi swastika tattoo will swear that they don't vote color or sex.（當民調問到選民他們會不會被人種或性別影響他們的選擇時，除非是那種白床單三K 黨及納粹狂熱份子，一般選民都會說他們不會被性別和人種所左右。）但事實是不是這樣？值得我們探討深思。因此作者就說：In any case, it's a far different story when voters in large swaths of America step into the privacy of the booth. Color and gender still count, and count big for many. （對大部分美國選民而言，當他們踏入無人監視的投票站時，他們的選擇又是另一回事了。人種和性別仍舊會影響，而且影響甚鉅）民主黨 認為不論推誰出來選，白宮仍會是他們的。但作者同樣認為，外在光鮮亮麗不一定是真相，他們還是有可能會黯淡的。畢竟天上星星和地上投票所是兩個世界。
